Cross |
The Christian interpretation of the Cross' symbol joins and completes the meaning this sign bears in the other traditions. The divine "will" proceeds down the vertical axis and comes into reality. The horizontal branch features a degree of this manifestation, or a "realm" that proceeds from it (the angelic realm, for instance). The crucified man thus becomes the highest and the most magnificient expression of the human form, since his verticalily abides by Heaven's Will, and since his arms' indefinite extension "embraces" the vast scope of human abilities. It is on the Cross that a human being may reach full accomplishment, i.e., vertical as well as horizontal. |

the form while being revealed by the same form. Using symbolic or poetic language may open up the way to this higher knowledge. Everything discursive that can heard or read cannot be considered "esoteric". |

"technical" etching |
?Copper-plate engraving? is the process used to print on copper. Previously moistered for adaptable purposes, the paper (genuine rag paper) is then laid on the copper-plate, and the whole is run between two cylinders. The pressure ensures ink transfers on to the paper. For typographic processes, positive sides are covered with ink ; the process is reversed here, as ink is put inside the metal cuttings. Marked with ink (possibly of different colours), the copper is then very smoothly wiped with one's hand, as to take off any excessive ink from areas bearing no cutting. This process is repeated for each print, thus allowing new chromatic research. These processes are entirely manual, which is not the case for ordinary lithographic processes. However, what could be considered as a constraint is in fact a tremendously appreciated guarantee for original prints lovers. When the copper engraving results from direct hand-cutting, it becomes a ?dry-point etching?, or chisel-work. When resulting from acid cuts, it becomes an "etching" (aqua forte). |

Hermetism |
Hermetism refers to the sum of knowledge relating to man's actions on his environment (in traditional civilisations). More inherent to art than to technical crafts, the expression of these practices was always cautious and allegoric. Because of the ?efficiency? of industrial man, only fragments or fancy tales remain from these traditional sciences. |

Artist books |
To my perception, artist books above all translate affectionate feelings for a text, or for words. In this context, and for the painter I am, the text plays the part of a scenery in which one has discovered some beauty... I wish the text could become metaphoric, so that the lines turn into some hillsides' curves, and the reader's idea becomes as many vertical arborescences... I would like the eyes to linger over a sentence just as one attempts to catch a glimpse of the meadow over the hedge... To paint with word, with signs, with the whiteness of the page and with the margins' sunshine ! As it is, I offer illustrations (this word is so objectionable) to my artist - or should I say ?painter?? -books : they are genuine pictures, very manifest and well-set alongside of the text, (I nearly wrote alongside of the furrow). They do not mean to disclose the beauty of the words, but as a judiciously chaste loin-cloth or veil, they rather intend to rest one's sight and soothe one's fever of ?seeing? what the words declare ...> ?L'art à la Page? Love of books exhibition Cagnes sur Mer, 1992 The artist books (texts and etchings) I create are hand-printed in my studio. Just as any aqua-forte, these are signed and numbered from 33 to 88 samples depending on circumstances. |

Then comes the time to refine and mature pictorial effects. To this purpose I use some paint previously ground with linseed oil, thus giving inimitable vibration to the spreading of light within the pictorial coatings. One can indeed use oil-painting on acrylic, but the reverse is not possible. I also mix oil-colours with polymerized oils and Copal resin, thus using a set of common techniques. |

Subtle |
The formal manifestation (revelation into forms) holds two aspects : one is tangible, while the other proceeds from the subtle or psychic realm (one may talk about imaginary or mental forms). This subtle realm is the vehicle with which the divine graces " incorporate " into the creation as to " inform " us about them. The act of worhiping these psychic forms while misjudging or mixing them up with their spiritual principles would constitute pratices of idolatry. |

Thulé |
Thulé is the original city, or the birth place of mankind at Golden age. For symbolic purposes, it is located up North, just below the Pole. It is also the source of all other traditions. |

Tradition |
The Tradition does not relate to customary practises (fashions, habits or uses, etc?). Either mental or physical, a human activity terms Traditional when conveying a spiritual reality of divine origin from man to man, all along the ages. This activity can be evolutive along the way, to match the specific conditions of the reference period. |
